HOW THE CANDLE WORKS
Medieval candle clocks were marked by the hour, and so is this one. The numeral at the top of the wax is how many hours of burn are left.
- Buy
- pours wax on. Every 1% of supply bought adds one mark, up to six a trade.
- Sell
- melts it off. Every 1% of supply sold takes one mark away, up to six a trade.
- Time
- burns it down, one mark an hour, every hour. A full candle lasts a day on its own.
- Full
- means it drips. Wax poured past mark XXIV runs down the side and goes on the drippings record.
- Out
- means smoke. At zero the flame goes out, but it isn't dead: the next buy relights it and the "lit for" clock starts again.
